BLISS IS NOT IGNORANCE

11th February 2010

Tomorrow evening sees the opening of the first major new exhibition of the new year here at The Henderson Gallery, and it's one to which we are all looking forward greatly.

'Bliss' by Charlie Anderson is a fascinating first solo show from an award-winning young artist who seems destined for great things. Shortlisted for this year's Jerwood Contemporary Painting Prize, Charlie's work is a vibrant and vigorous mash-up of popular culture past and present, of the plethora of images from film and fashion, comic books and clubbing, that at times threaten to overwhelm our daily lives.

Charlie is already starting to attract great critical interest, and for Duncan Macmillan his work 'recalls Rauschenberg without being derivative'.. Eminent Edinburgh socialite and entrepreneur Henry Spurway sees other influences at work however. Intriguingly - and yet bafflingly - Henry discerns clear parallels between Charlie Anderson and Lady Gaga. Which one is right? 'Bliss', which runs until March 20th, gives you the chance to decide.

My money's on Spurway though
