Squire draws inspiration from his previous life as a musician, incorprating tablature imagery, and from a series of albums by jazz artist Miles Davis which he listened to in his studio while creating the works - one of which gives the exhibition its title.

'GUYS' HE SAID, 'IT'S A GREAT WALL' - LIVE PAINTING FROM THE LEGENDARY ELPH
In a week when we're thinking about politicians who can't open their mouths without putting their foot in it, let's not forget Richard Nixon's comment to his hosts on a state visit to China. 'Guys' he said, 'It's a great wall.'
Well, here's another great wall, and remember as long as you've got your Elph, that's the main thing. Sorry.

AN ODDLY BEAUTIFUL ANIMATION - BY NONE OTHER THAN OUR OWN TINA THE GREEK
Our second Festival exhibition of 2009 was 'Through a Glass Darkly' by Paul Martin, and 9th September saw the premiere of an oddly beautiful animation based on Paul's work by our very own award winning Christina Alepi - which also meant a first appearance for artist Mark Powell's weird and wonderful end of the pier viewing machine.
Anyway here it is now for your viewing pleasure - so sit back and enjoy.

THE EDINBURGH ART FESTIVAL 2009 - THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY BY PAUL MARTIN
Paul Martin has exhibited widely both at home and abroad, and has work in the collections of The Royal Academy, The British Museum and the BBC.
Over the course of his career he has garnered many awards including The British Institution prize for Printmaking and The Royal Academy Awards for Painting and Printmaking.
The second of our Summer Festival Exhibitions 2009 is Through a Glass Darkly an exhibition of new work which foregrounds the most recent developments in Paul’s thought and art. These pictures are an attempt to describe the presence of a universal language and essence within the phenomenal world; they seek to jolt us into realising what things could or just might be like. Through painterly metaphors of sign, rhythm, matter and colour, all revealed through light, the exhibition presents us with a new perspective on our surroundings, and invites us into Pauls unique visual world.

THE OPENING NIGHT OF UNSPOKEN LINES BY JOYCE GUNN CAIRNS
Another opening at the Henderson Gallery, another fantastic night! The Private View for the show 'Unspoken Lines' by Joyce Gunn Cairns attracted the great and the good in their droves to Thistle Street Lane last night. The diminutive but delightful Claire from the Bistro made sure the bubbly kept on flowing and the Henderson's kitchen team excelled themselves with the best selection of nibbles your humble correspondent has ever tasted (mind you, I don't get out much). Peter Henderson made a speech that is already being compared in some quarters to the Gettysburg Address, Sally Magnusson made an even better one, and, oh my dear, the people! Hairdresser to the Stars Charlie Miller was there, and restaurateur Tony Singh, and Leith legend Mary Moriarty, and novelist Alasdair Gray, and arts impresario Richard Demarco and well, just about everyone. The show runs until August 15th, and you can read more about it here
THE EDINBURGH ART FESTIVAL 2009 - UNSPOKEN LINES BY JOYCE GUNN CAIRNS
Unspoken Lines by Joyce Gunn Cairns MBE develops an important strand in her work portrait heads of key figures in Scottish life.
This began as a reflection of her love for poetry, but here she has drawn people from many different fields. What they all share is an absolute passion for what they do. Many of the sitters pictured here have ended up becoming close personal friends. A brilliant conversationalist, Joyce has an uncanny knack during a sitting of drawing out the inner life of her subjects and giving it artistic form.
She has exhibited regularly for over 20 years and her work is housed in many important public collections, including the SNPG and the universities of Oxford, Cambridge and Edinburgh.

ARTIST JOYCE GUNN CAIRNS IN CONVERSATION WITH ACTOR JOHN CAIRNEY
'Unspoken Lines' by Joyce Gunn Cairns MBE is an extraordinary exhibition of new work by one of the hardest working and most highly regarded artists in the country today. In a series of nearly 40 portrait drawings of prominent figures from different areas of Scottish life, this show provides an invaluable 'snapshot' of the cultural state of the nation at the end of the first decade of the new century.
